The institutionsThe basement room on Wellington that has been swinging longer than most Toronto clubs have existed. Live jazz, swing and blues most nights it runs, a dance floor the size of a rug, and somehow that is enough. The moneyBand rooms: expect a cover or minimum on show nights, usually $10 to $25 depending on the act, plus drinks. Listening bars: usually no cover, cocktails in the mid-to-high teens, and you can genuinely run a whole night on two drinks if that is the budget. The dressy end scales up: One Caviar is a book-and-spend room, Valerie prices like the view. Compared to a King West club night with cover, coat check and marked-up bottles, the jazz scene is honestly one of the best value nights in the city.
Weeknights are the cheat code. Kensei runs Tuesday to Sunday and 915 Dupont from Wednesday, so a Tuesday or Wednesday jazz night hits rooms at their best with no crowd. Weekends are for the institutions: Reservoir and Lula on a Friday or Saturday are the full experience, just book or show up early. Sunday is the sleeper for a wind-down session at whichever listening bar is running.
