Pamenar is Kensington Market's shape-shifter: proper espresso and chai by day, cocktails and vinyl DJs in the backyard by night. It's been the Market's living room for over a decade and the garden patio is one of the best hidden hangs in the city. Here's the full rundown.

The scene

What it's actually like

By day it's a café at 307 Augusta, cortados and homemade chai, Market people drifting in and out. Around sunset it flips. The lights drop, the drinks list takes over, and the backyard patio, all marigolds, string lights and mismatched seats under a gazebo, becomes the main event. On DJ nights someone's spinning vinyl while the whole yard talks over cheap-enough drinks. There's no dance floor and no velvet rope, just a very good backyard doing a lot of work.

Pamenar is known as the Kensington hang, the spot you take out-of-towners to show them what the Market actually feels like at night. It's looser than the cocktail bars on Ossington and warmer than a dive. Embassy up the street gets more of the DJ-bar crowd, Handlebar gets the party crowd, Pamenar gets everyone in between. The no-laptops-at-night culture keeps it social.

What's on

Pamenar Thursdays & Saturdays

The vinyl DJ nights land most reliably on Thursdays and Saturdays, with other one-off events and BBQ nights scattered through the warm months. The backyard starts filling around 8-9pm and stays comfortable-crowded until close. Fridays and Saturdays run latest. Show up before 9pm if you want a table in the yard, later if you're happy standing with a drink while the records spin.

Café Pamenar: the full review

Address & location

307 Augusta Ave, right in the guts of Kensington Market near Augusta and Nassau. It's a narrow storefront that's easy to walk past if you're not looking: modest signage, usually a few people out front. The Market is a short walk from the College or Spadina streetcars. Don't drive, Kensington parking is a punishment.

The room

The inside is small, brick and wood, more café than bar in bones, with the counter running the show. The real room is out back: a genuinely great garden patio with a gazebo, plants everywhere, and enough seating that it feels like a friend's backyard party. Sound stays at talk-over-it level even on DJ nights. In winter the action compresses inside and it gets cozy fast.

Who's there

Kensington's whole ecosystem: artists, students, service industry folks, longtime Market heads, mostly 20s and 30s. It's a zero-pretension crowd. Daytime brings coffee people and readers, night brings dates and small crews. Nobody's dressed up and nobody cares, which is exactly the appeal.

What's great

The backyard patio is top-tier, one of the best casual patios in the core, and regulars mention it constantly. The day-to-night flip means you can start with a cortado and end with a cocktail without changing venues. Vinyl DJ nights are free and actually good, loose selectors playing records to a backyard instead of an algorithm playing to a club. The chai and coffee are legitimately excellent, a decade-plus of reviews agree.

What to know going in

It's small inside, so cold or rainy nights get tight quick. Laptops get side-eye at night, the culture here is talk-to-your-people, so don't plan to camp on Wi-Fi in the evening. Table service is minimal, you order at the counter. Sunday hours run shorter than the rest of the week, so it's not the move for a late Sunday session.

Move like you know

Come on a Thursday or Saturday for the vinyl nights and get there by 8:30 to lock a backyard table. Start with the chai if it's early, move to the cocktail or wine list after dark. Order at the counter, tip, and claim the gazebo corner if it's free, best seat in the yard. Use it as your Kensington basecamp: dinner from a Market spot, drinks here, then wander. Bring cash-friendly patience on packed nights, the counter line moves but it's one register.

The music

Vinyl DJ sets are the signature, most reliably Thursdays and Saturdays, plus one-off events and summer BBQ nights. Selectors keep it eclectic: grooves, house, funk, whatever fits a backyard at 10pm. Volume stays conversational, this is records-as-atmosphere, not a rave. Other nights it's playlists that match the same laid-back register.

What to wear

Whatever you're already wearing. This is Kensington: thrifted, casual, comfortable. There is no dress code and dressing club-fancy would actually make you the odd one out. Layer up for the backyard on cooler nights since you'll want to stay out there.

Cover & getting in

Free, always in our experience, even on DJ nights. No line game to play either. The only entry strategy is timing: land before 9pm on a weekend if you want to sit in the yard rather than hover.

Age limit

All ages while it's café hours, 19+ treatment once the bar takes over at night. Standard ID check if you're ordering drinks and look young.
