The dress code guide
What to Wear to Every Toronto Club
The real door dress codes for 146 Toronto clubs and bars — pulled from how each room actually runs, not a generic "no sportswear" copy-paste. Sorted from the strictest doors to the come-as-you-are spots.
TT By the TopTorontoClubs teamUpdated June 20267 min readWe actually go out
Getting turned away at the door is the worst way to start a night, and in Toronto it almost always comes down to one of three things: shoes, sportswear, or showing up looking like you didn't make an effort. The city's doors run on a spectrum. The upscale King West and bottle-service rooms read your whole fit before you reach the front; the Queen West and Ossington spots care far more about whether you're fun than whether your sneakers are clean. Below is where each room actually sits, so you dress for the right door.
The safe default across almost every club here: dark, fitted, clean. Closed shoes you can move in, no team jerseys, no gym wear, no beachwear. Get that right and the only doors that'll still stop you are the few genuinely strict ones — which we've flagged.
The cheat sheet
Toronto's three door tiers
Smart / Upscale — dress to impress. No sneakers, no sportswear, often no hats; collared or elevated looks for men, going-out fits for everyone. This is the King West premium and bottle-service crowd. Smart-casual — the Toronto default. Clean, put-together streetwear is fine; just lose the gym clothes and beat-up runners. Relaxed — come as you are. Dive-ish, hidden, and bar-led rooms where nobody's checking your shoes.
Every club, by how strict the door is

The plan
How to never get turned away
Three rules cover it. One: when in doubt, dress up, not down — no door in this city turns away someone who looks sharp. Two: shoes are the first thing they check, so closed, clean footwear is the single safest move. Three: get your name down before you arrive. A guest list or a booth tells the door you're expected, and an expected guest gets a lot more grace on a borderline fit. You can browse rooms and lock in free guest list at the city's partner clubs through our full club list, or skip the line entirely with bottle service.
What is the dress code for most Toronto clubs?
The Toronto default is smart-casual: clean, fitted, put-together. Closed shoes, no sportswear or jerseys, no gym wear or beachwear. The upscale King West and bottle-service rooms push stricter — no sneakers, no hats, dress to impress — while Queen West, Ossington and the hidden bars are far more relaxed. Dark and fitted is the look that gets you into almost everywhere.
Can you wear sneakers to a club in Toronto?
At most of the city's rooms, yes — clean, stylish sneakers are fine at the smart-casual and relaxed spots, which is the majority. The exceptions are the upscale and bottle-service clubs, mainly on King West, where the door often turns away sneakers entirely. If you're heading somewhere we've flagged Smart / Upscale, wear dress shoes to be safe.
What should I avoid wearing to get past the door?
Across nearly every Toronto club: athletic wear, team jerseys, gym shorts, baggy or sloppy fits, work boots, hats at the stricter rooms, and beachwear. Those are the most common reasons people get turned away. Dark, fitted and clean is the universal safe bet.
Does being on the guest list help with dress code?
It helps. Doors give expected guests more grace on a borderline outfit, and being on a list or holding a booth signals you're meant to be there. It won't override a hard no-sneakers policy at the strictest rooms, but on a marginal call it can be the difference. Get your name down before you leave the house.
