Supermarket is Kensington Market's no-frills dance bar: funk, 90s, hip-hop and dancehall, a casual young-professional crowd, and a back-room dancefloor that fills up cheap. Here's the honest rundown, the hours and where to find it.

The scene

What it's actually like

Supermarket is pretty much what you'd expect from Kensington Market: a no-frills dance bar. Walk in and the front is a bar, tables on a raised section to the right, the bar to the left, and a big square dancefloor at the back. No bottle-service theatre, no velvet rope, just a room that goes when the DJ does.

It reads as a semi-mature dance bar. Not as young or messy as a university spot, a touch more refined, but still loose and easy. If you want a casual night with a genuinely interesting music mix and a cheap door, this is the move.

The honest review

Supermarket Toronto: the full review

Address & location

Supermarket's in the heart of Kensington Market at 268 Augusta Ave (M5T 2L9), right on the Augusta strip with everything else the Market's got going.

The room

The front of the venue is a bar, with tables on a raised section to the right and the bar to the left. The back is a large square dancefloor. It's not huge, so after peak the crowd can thin out, but when it's full it's a good time.

Who's there

A young professional, casual crowd, roughly 20 to 30, dressed very casually. More grown than a university dance-bar but nowhere near pretentious. People come to dance, not to pose.

The music

Supermarket meshes a wide range of genres on Friday and Saturday: funk, 90s, hip-hop, trap and dancehall. It's the kind of eclectic, fun mix you'd expect coming out of Kensington Market, and it's a real part of why the room has its own character.

What to wear

Anything goes. The crowd dresses very casually, so wear what's comfortable and don't overthink it.

Cover & getting in

Cover is $10. Walk-ins are the norm here, so just roll up. In summer the line can build, so getting there early keeps your wait short.

Hours

Supermarket runs Friday and Saturday, 10pm to 2am.
